Wood chips (BRF)

Fragmented ramial wood or wood chips.

Rameal fragmented wood, or wood chips, refers to tree branches and wood chipped in a wood chipper.

The benefits of wood chips

Rameal fragmented wood, or wood chips (BRF), is composed of tree branches and wood chipped using a wood chipper. This organic amendment is valued for its ability to stimulate soil biodiversity by providing young lignin for beneficial fungi and micro-organisms. Wood shavings are often used as mulch to protect young trees from winter frosts and to create natural paths in the woods.

Decomposing Rameal Chipped Wood (RCW) provides nutrients to the soil that cedar chips cannot. It helps form a rich humus, which improves soil structure and health. As it decomposes over 3-4 years, RCW transforms into nutrient-rich soil, ideal for safely enriching garden soils. It is recommended that wood chips contain at least 60% hardwood for this purpose.

The use of BRF

RCW is widely used in gardens and nurseries as a mulch, protecting plants and shrubs from bad weather, frost and drought. It acts as a soil insulator, protecting roots from winter cold and nourishing the soil in spring. In hot weather, it helps conserve soil moisture, particularly around conifers or in blueberry fields. RCW is also useful for protecting the soil around shrubs and trees on your property, including cedar hedges.

Create nature trails in wooded areas

We prefer to use BRF or wood chips to create natural paths in our customers' woodlands. This gives the pathway a natural look while preventing weed growth and providing soil nutrients for the surrounding trees and shrubs. This method is both environmentally friendly and offers optimum walking comfort, far more so than gravel or rock paths.
